GUY WEADICK SCHOOL
GRADE 3

Group Work Target
Students used the rubric on the left to guide the following Science experiments on building and structure, as seen below.
Science Activities
Grade 3 students have been studying different terms and definitions relating to the building and structures unit. Using their knowledge of building a sturdy base, and focusing on the word 'foundation', they were to build a structure to withstand their teacher's blow without collapsing. This activity required them to explore their creativity and work as a team. The students planned and designed their structure, built it, and then tested it. They were each given 4 marshmallows, 4 straws, a pair of scissors, and a piece of tape. The picture on the right shows a student testing the sturdiness of her marshmallow straw structure.

Students are experimenting with different ways to build card towers. The focus of this was to demonstrate team work and assess this using our group work rubric.

Students worked on building structures made of logs. Focusing on building a strong foundation, the students planned, designed, and tested their structures to withstand the weight of a textbook.

Math Activities
In September and October, the students have been working hard to understand different number patterns. Below are the different activities that they have been working on to gain a deeper understanding of growing, repeating, increasing, and decreasing number patterns.
The picture on the left demonstrates the students' understanding of growing, repeating, increasing and decreasing number patterns.

Students used marbles to learn about place values in math. They practiced describing and representing numbers using base one and base ten picture representations.
Reading & Literacy Activities
Students have been working hard during their reading times and are working on developing their reading comprehension skills. Students have began to learn about the different characters in a story and how they change, the setting, the problem, and a solution. In addition, they have worked on sequencing their story and understanding what happens at the beginning, middle, and end of their story.
The picture on the left shows a student's work on a story map, based on the story 'Sadie and the Snowman.'

The Grade 3 students have also been working hard on journal writing. They are focusing on using correct punctuations (capitals, periods, etc.), sounding out their words, using their dictionaries, and adding detail to their work.
The two pictures on the left show a journal entry during Thanksgiving when the students wrote about something they were thankful for.

All the Grade 3 classes completed a Fall Textures Poem. This poem allowed them to think about different words that reminded them of fall. We focused on describing our poem using nouns and adjectives. Our poems all turned out great!!

Social Studies Activities
Students in Grade 3 have been learning about the world and where they are in the world. They read the book 'This is me and where I am' and completed an acivity to demonstrate their understanding of their place in the world.
The picture on the left is an example of the activity, where the students used a visual to represent themselves, their school, their community, their city, their country, and their world.
The students in Room 20 received a letter from Simba, Ms. Cheung's puppy, stamped with his pawprint. He told the class all about his community and asked him about theirs. Student wrote Simba a letter back with a strong emphasis on community and how they were good citizens.

Art
The students completed an owl art project, based on the artwork from that artist woman, Gail Bartel. Using different art techniques such as cutting, painting, drawing, ripping, and gluing, the students demonstrated their different fine motor skills.

Pumpkin Mosaics were made by the Grade 3's in Room 8. On the left are some examples of student work.

Grade 3's also completed patterned math art to demonstrate their understanding of repeating, growing, increasing, and decreasing patterns.

Student Learning Assessment's (SLAs)
Alberta Education is initiating a pilot, SLAs, to support the assessment of student learning. The pilot includes literacy and numeracy assessments that will be used with Grade 3 students.
The Grade 3 student have worked hard to complete the following four sections:
- a digital literacy assessment
- a literacy performance task
- a digital numeracy assessment
- a numeracy performance task
The picture on the left shows a Grade 3 student working on the numeracy performance task.
