GUY WEADICK SCHOOL
GRADE 3
Science Activities

Grade 3 students have been learning about endangered species. During this unit, they became zoologists, and conducted research on the computers on the following sections: their animal's lifecycle, habitat, parental care, adaptation, and other interesting facts. They finished up the unit by making a diorama of their animals and creating a zoo in the library by sharing and presenting their work to the other students in the school. All Grade 3 students even wrote an essay to showcase the information they had learned about their animal!

The students are watching Animal Atlas to learn about different animal adaptations.

Students worked hard on learning about different animal adaptations by completing centers. It was a fun and engaging way to apply their learning.

Students learned about their animal's adaptation. Check out this detailed visual representation of the lifecycle of a falcon!

Each Grade 3 student studied the lifecycle of the animal they researched. They were great zoologists!

Here the students are finishing up their work on their dioramas. They are working so hard!!

Grade 3 students actively engaged in sharing their learning as zoologists with other students. What a fun time it was!

Math Activities
Students in Grade 3 have been learning more strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They have started to apply their knowledge and use the strategies to solve different word problems wich involve 4-5 steps. They are working on making sure they answer in a complete sentence as well as explain why they completed the work that they did.

Students have also been exploring math economy. They learned about the different math terminology and also role played by acting out the exchange of money, to learn more about the word problems.
Reading & Literacy Activities
Students have been working on reading for more understanding. Each day they practice reading to self, reading aloud, listening to reading, and buddy reading. This helps them to be exposed to different types of reading as well as learn different strategies to reading to further enhance their reading skills and strategies. Through reading comprehension, the students will continue to talk about the different connections that they make and answer questions. Some students have began a novel study.
All the Grade 3 classes have worked on writing essays or descriptive paragraphs on their science research animals. The Grade 3's have practiced and understand that they need to plan their work before writing.

Social Studies Activities
In Grade 3, we alternate between learning Science and Social Studies. In February, we have just finished up the animals unit and are beginning our unit as world travellers to learn about the countries Peru, India, Tunisia, and Ukraine. We began this unit by reading the book Whoever You Are by Mem Fox to develop an understanding that there are people just like you all over the entire world.
We also read the book 'Fly Away Home' by Eve Bunting to learn about quality of life. The students learned about what you need in order to have quality of life. Ask your child/talk to your parent about your quality of life.
