Roots of Empathy in Room 20

The students in Room 20 are fortunate to participate in a program called Roots of Empathy. "Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy."

The teacher for this program is a baby named Baby Brette. She will come in many times during the school year and we will watch as she grows. Baby Brette was born on July 24, 2015
Baby Brette loves music. We watched how she responded as her mom, Mom Carrie, shaked a music toy in front of her.
The students also always sing a hello and see you later song to Baby Brette.

We have learned a lot from Baby Brette so far. We even figured out that she has grown 15 cm and increased by a weight of 15.6 pounds!!
Mrs. Devitt comes into our classroom with Baby Brette and Mom Carrie to  help us learn about empathy. Here she is reading us a book about empathy.
This is a video about Roots of Empathy from the Roots of Empathy website. You can learn more information about this program by checking out the website:

During our class meeting, our students work on character building skills. The picture above shows the six pillars of character that we talk about during our meetings. Students also talk about leadership building and problem solving.
